Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum
Using Community Engagement to Reposition the Institution.
Transitioning from a Founder-Driven Institution to a Thriving Sustainable Museum.
As curator of education Harry developed the Student Docent program, in which middle and high school students are trained in a Socratic dialogue-based approach enabling them to lead their classmates on tours through the Museum’s exhibitions. This program brought the Aldrich, a contemporary art organization that had been more focused on the New York art scene, into engagement with its community.
Harry became director in 1996, and building on this heightened engagement led the conception, development, and construction of the Aldrich’s new building and sculpture garden in 2006. This process completed the institution’s evolution from a founder-driven organization to a thriving, sustainable contemporary art museum.
